Heidrun Hartmann was a specialist in two particular plant families:
- Aizoaceae: These are often called "ice plants" or "fig-marigolds." Many of them are succulents, meaning they have thick, fleshy parts that store water. They are often found in dry places.
- Crassulaceae: This family also includes many succulent plants, like jade plants and sedums. They are known for their ability to survive in tough conditions.

How Was She Honored?
Heidrun Hartmann's hard work and discoveries were recognized by other scientists. In 1995, another botanist named Steven Allen Hammer decided to name a new group of plants after her. He named this new genus Hartmanthus.
