Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Heidrun Hartmann, born Heidrun Elsbeth Klara Osterwald (August 5, 1942 – July 11, 2016), was an important German botanist. Botanists are scientists who study plants. She spent her life learning about and discovering different types of plants.

Who Was Heidrun Hartmann?

Heidrun Hartmann was born in Kolberg in 1942. She grew up to become a dedicated scientist who loved plants. Her work helped us understand more about the plant world.

Her Work as a Botanist

Heidrun Hartmann worked at the University of Hamburg in Germany. This is a big university where many scientists do important research. Her main job was to study plants, especially certain families of plants.

What Plants Did She Study?

Heidrun Hartmann was a specialist in two particular plant families:

  • Aizoaceae: These are often called "ice plants" or "fig-marigolds." Many of them are succulents, meaning they have thick, fleshy parts that store water. They are often found in dry places.
  • Crassulaceae: This family also includes many succulent plants, like jade plants and sedums. They are known for their ability to survive in tough conditions.

She traveled to different parts of the world to find and study these plants. She collected many plant samples from places like Africa and South America. This helped her learn how these plants grow in their natural homes.

How Was She Honored?

Heidrun Hartmann's hard work and discoveries were recognized by other scientists. In 1995, another botanist named Steven Allen Hammer decided to name a new group of plants after her. He named this new genus Hartmanthus.

Hartmanthus is a group of tropical, succulent flowering plants. They belong to the Aizoaceae family, which was one of Heidrun Hartmann's specialties. Naming a plant genus after a scientist is a very special way to honor their contributions to science. It means her legacy will live on through the plants she helped us understand.
