Heilwige Bloemardinne
Born 1265?
Died 23 August 1335
Known for Christian mysticism

Heilwige Bloemardinne (born around 1265, died August 23, 1335) was a special kind of Christian teacher. She lived in Brussels, a city in what is now Belgium. People also knew her as Heilwijch Blomart or Bloemardine. She was known for her deep spiritual ideas and teachings.

Who Was Heilwige Bloemardinne?

Heilwige Bloemardinne was the daughter of a very rich merchant. Her father, Wilhelm Bloemart, was a powerful person in the government of Brussels. This strong family background helped her a lot.

A Respected Teacher

Unlike some other spiritual teachers of her time, Heilwige had strong support. The local government leaders protected her. This meant that groups like the Inquisition, who often questioned new religious ideas, could not harm her.

People respected her so much that they saw her as a very holy person. They even called her a "living saint." When she passed away, her special silver chair was given to the Duchess of Brabant. Many believed this chair had special powers because of its connection to Heilwige.

Her Spiritual Ideas

Heilwige Bloemardinne wrote a book about her spiritual thoughts. Sadly, no copies of this book exist today. Another famous spiritual writer, John of Ruysbroeck, wrote about her ideas. He disagreed with some of them, calling them different from common beliefs.

The Idea of Seraphic Love

One of Heilwige's main teachings was about "seraphic love." This idea suggested that people could feel very close to God. She taught that a wonderful feeling, like a taste of heaven, could be experienced while still on Earth. People believed she was so special that two angels, called seraphim, were with her when she prayed.

Being Close to God

Another idea linked to her followers was about being completely open to God. They believed in giving up their own wishes and choices. This way, they could be fully guided by God. This teaching was similar to ideas from other spiritual teachers of that time.

Heilwige Bloemardinne also shared her ideas widely. It seems she used small books or pamphlets to spread her teachings. Traveling teachers would then explain these lessons to many people, including those who were not rich or educated.

Her Lasting Influence

Heilwige Bloemardinne's teachings built on earlier spiritual traditions. She continued a path started by people like Beatrice of Nazareth. Beatrice was known for her strong faith and not fearing anyone in her spiritual journey.

Heilwige's movement grew and inspired others. One example is Jeanne Dabenton in Paris. Jeanne led a group called the "Society of the Poor." This shows how Heilwige's ideas spread and influenced spiritual groups in other places.
