About Helensburgh Rugby Club
Club History
Helensburgh RFC started way back in 1963. In 2013, the club celebrated its 50th birthday, which is called a golden jubilee! About 400 people, including some from far away, came to a special dinner to celebrate this big milestone.
Fun Facts About the Team
In 2004, something really cool happened with the Helensburgh team! All the players in their main team (called the 1st XV) became dads within five years. Together, they had 15 sons, which was enough to make a whole new team!
Also, in 2012, Princess Anne visited Helensburgh RFC. She helped open a brand new stand at the club's home ground.
Helensburgh Sevens Tournament
The club hosts its own special rugby tournament called the Helensburgh Sevens. In this type of rugby, teams have seven players instead of the usual fifteen, which makes the game much faster and more exciting!
Other Rugby Sevens Events
The Royal Navy also holds their Northern Sevens tournament at Ardencaple, the home of Helensburgh RFC. Because Helensburgh owns the ground, they are allowed to play in this tournament. However, they cannot represent the Royal Navy in other matches. The Helensburgh team did very well in 2017, reaching the final of the Northern Sevens!
Team Achievements
Helensburgh RFC has won their own Helensburgh Sevens tournament twice:
- Helensburgh Sevens
- Champions: 1972, 2014
