Hemker (also known as Hemkerville) was once a small place in Franklin County, Missouri. It was an unincorporated community, which means it didn't have its own local government like a city or town. In 1970, the last people moved away, and Hemker was no longer a separate community. Today, this area is considered part of Robertsville, Missouri.
What Was Hemker's Story?
A post office was opened in Hemker in 1885. A post office is a place where people can send and receive mail. This office helped the community until 1903. The name "Hemker" came from a man named Richard Hemaker. He was an early postmaster, which means he was in charge of the post office. He decided to give the community his last name.
