The Hendren Building is a special old building in the Nob Hill area of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was built in 1946. This building is a great example of a cool style called Streamline Moderne architecture.

It shows how much the city grew after World War II. People started using cars more, and new businesses popped up to serve them. The Hendren Building was one of the last projects designed by a famous architect named T. Charles Gaastra. It became a protected historic site in New Mexico in 1999 and then nationally in 2000.

History of the Hendren Building

The Hendren Building was built in 1946 by J.L. Hendren. He owned a grocery store and saw that the Nob Hill area was growing fast. People were moving further from downtown. They needed shops and services closer to their homes.

Mr. Hendren thought a building with doctors' offices and a pharmacy would be very helpful. He asked T. Charles Gaastra to design it. This was one of the last buildings Gaastra worked on before he passed away in 1947.

Design Inspiration and Construction

It's believed that the building's unique Streamline Moderne look came from a photo Mr. Hendren saw. The photo showed a similar building in the Midwest. Construction started in early 1946. It took about nine months to finish.

Early Success and Use

Mr. Hendren's idea worked out well. The building was completely rented out within a year. The first businesses included a pharmacy, an electrical company, a luggage store, and doctors' offices.

The Hendren Building has been home to many different businesses over the years. It is still used for its original purpose today. The building was updated in the early 2000s. Some parts, like the black glass on the outside, were changed.

Architecture and Style

The Hendren Building is a one-story building with a flat roof. It sits on a sharp corner where Dartmouth Drive and Monte Vista Boulevard meet. The building is shaped like a "V." It has sections that stretch along both streets. These sections hold many small business spaces.

Streamline Moderne Features

The building's design has strong horizontal lines. It also has a rounded entrance at the corner. These features are very typical of the Streamline Moderne style. This style often looks like it's ready for speed, like a train or a ship.

The outside of the building was originally covered with pink stone. It also had black Carrara Glass. However, the black glass was removed during the updates in the early 2000s. Large block letters above the roof spell out the name of the building.
