Hendrik Samuel "Henk" Houthakker (born December 31, 1924 – died April 15, 2008) was an important Dutch-American economist and university professor. He taught at Stanford University and later at Harvard University. He also advised President Richard Nixon on economic issues.
Early Life and Education
Hendrik Houthakker was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He came from a Jewish family. During World War II, his family was kept safe by Roman Catholics. After the war, he studied at the University of Amsterdam. He graduated from there in 1949.
A Career in Economics
Houthakker began his teaching career at Stanford University. He taught there from 1954 to 1960. After that, he moved to Harvard University. He spent the rest of his career teaching economics at Harvard.
From 1969 to 1971, Houthakker worked for the United States government. He was part of President Richard Nixon's Council of Economic Advisers. This group helps the President make smart decisions about the country's economy.
Family Life
Hendrik Houthakker was married to Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka. She was a Polish-American philosopher. They were married for 52 years. Anna-Teresa also started the World Phenomenology Institute. Together, they had three children: Louis, Jan, and Isabelle.
Later Years
Hendrik Houthakker passed away on April 15, 2008. He was 83 years old. He died in Lebanon, New Hampshire, due to health problems.
