Becoming Countess of Montbéliard
Henriette was the daughter of Henry of Orbe, who passed away in 1396. She became the official heir to her grandfather, Stephen, Count of Montbéliard. This meant she would inherit the important title and lands of Montbéliard. Her family had a long history of ruling, with her great-grandfather being Henry I of Montbéliard.
Marriage and Montbéliard's Future
Henriette married Eberhard IV, Count of Württemberg. Together, they ruled the city of Montbéliard. This marriage was very important for the future of Montbéliard. Because of their union, Montbéliard later became a part of Württemberg. This was a big change for the region.
Henriette's Role as Regent
After her husband, Eberhard IV, died in 1419, Henriette took on an even bigger role. She became the regent for her son, Ulrich. Being a regent meant she governed the lands and made decisions on behalf of her son until he was old enough to rule himself. She continued to lead Montbéliard wisely during this time.
A Royal Wedding for Her Daughter
In 1422, Henriette's daughter, Anna (born 1408 – died 1471), had a very special wedding. Anna, who was also the Countess of Katzenelnbogen, married Philipp I, Count of Katzenelnbogen in Darmstadt. This was one of the most magnificent weddings of the medieval period. Anna brought a large dowry of 32,000 florins to the marriage. A dowry was money or property given by the bride's family to the groom or his family.
