Henriette Major (born January 6, 1933 – died November 17, 2006) was a talented Canadian writer from Quebec. She wrote many books, especially for children, and also worked on TV shows.

Henriette was born in Montreal. She first studied to become a teacher, but soon realized it wasn't what she wanted to do. After she became a mother, she started writing down the stories she told her own children. This helped her remember them and was the start of her writing career!

Her Amazing Writing Journey

Henriette tried other jobs, like being a researcher for radio and television. But she loved writing the most and decided to make it her main career. She wrote scripts for popular TV series such as La Boîte à surprise [fr] and L'Évangile en papier [fr]. She also wrote two plays for a puppet theater group called Théâtre sans fil.

Henriette Major was incredibly productive! She wrote nearly a thousand articles for magazines like Châtelaine and Maclean's. Even more impressively, she published about one hundred children's books in Quebec and France.

Awards and Recognition

Her TV series Les boucaniers d'eau douce [fr] won an award in 1978 called the Prix des émissions éducatives. This award recognized it as a great educational show. From 1976 to 1990, she was also a director for the "Pour lire" book series at Les Éditions Héritage [fr].

Henriette Major also created several collections of songs for children. Some of these fun songbooks include Chansons et rondes pour s'amuser (Songs and Rounds for Fun) and Chansons drôles, chansons folles (Funny Songs, Crazy Songs).

A Lasting Legacy

Henriette Major passed away suddenly at her home in Montreal when she was 73 years old. To honor her amazing work and contributions to literature, a special award was created in her name. It's called the Prix littéraire Henriette-Major, and it's given by the publishing company Dominique et Compagnie.
