The Henry G. Brownell House was a special old building in Taunton, Massachusetts. It was built in 1893 and was a great example of a style called Georgian Colonial Revival architecture. For many years, it was a meeting place for the local Elks Lodge. Because of its beautiful design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Sadly, the house was taken down in 2014.

About the Henry G. Brownell House

The Henry G. Brownell House was located on High Street in Taunton. It was a two-and-a-half story house made of wood. The house had a unique roof shape called a gambrel roof. This roof has two slopes on each side, making it look a bit like a barn roof. There were chimneys at each end of the house. The outside was covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.

Unique Architectural Features

The roof had two round-topped windows, called dormers, that stuck out. There was also a small pointed section, like a mini-roof, in the middle of the house. The corners of the building had flat, column-like decorations called pilasters.

A wide and deep porch welcomed visitors at the front door. This porch was held up by round columns. Above the main entrance, there was a special three-part window. This type of window is known as a Palladian window. It had two flat columns on either side and a small window above it.

History of the Brownell House

The house was built in 1893 for Henry G. Brownell. A local builder named L.M. Witherell designed and constructed it. It was considered one of the best examples of the Colonial Revival style in Taunton. This style brought back popular designs from earlier American colonial times.

In 1984, the house was recognized for its architectural importance. It was then listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history or architecture.

The House's Final Years

For many years, the Henry G. Brownell House served as a meeting hall for the Elks Lodge. The Elks are a community group that helps people and does charity work. In early 2014, the house was sold to a company called Arista Development. On March 18, 2014, the historic house was torn down. A Walgreens pharmacy was built on the site where the house once stood.
