Henry MacCormac was born in 1879 in Belfast, Ireland. His parents were John and Lucie MacCormac. He was named after his grandfather, Dr. Henry MacCormac, who was also a well-known doctor in Belfast.
His Education
Henry MacCormac studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He finished his medical studies in 1903. Soon after, he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians of England. This meant he was a qualified doctor.
His Medical Career
Henry MacCormac worked as a skin doctor at Middlesex Hospital. His friends and students often called him 'Harry Mac'. He was very liked by his students and patients. Other doctors also respected him a lot. In 1945, he gave special talks called the Lumleian Lectures at the Royal College of Physicians.
Serving in World War I
During the First World War, MacCormac was a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. This group provides medical care for the army. He worked at the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital. Later in the war, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel.
His Family Life
In 1931, Henry MacCormac married Marion Broomhall. She was born in 1906 and passed away in 1998. They had one son named Richard MacCormac. Richard grew up to be a famous architect. Marion's family also included famous people, like her great-uncle James Hudson Taylor, who was a missionary in China.
Later Years and Legacy
Henry MacCormac passed away in Marylebone, London, on December 12, 1950. He was 71 years old. His wife, Marion, and his son, Richard, survived him. Richard MacCormac later started his own architecture company, MJP Architects. He was also knighted in 2001, becoming Sir Richard MacCormac.
