Henry Radclyffe, 2nd Earl of Sussex (born in 1507, died in 1557) was an important English nobleman. He was also known as Henry Radcliffe. He was the son of Robert Radclyffe, 1st Earl of Sussex and Elizabeth Stafford, Countess of Sussex. Henry followed in his father's footsteps to become an Earl.

Henry's Family Life

Henry Radclyffe was married two times during his life. He had children from both marriages.

First Marriage and Children

Henry's first wife was Elizabeth Howard. She was the daughter of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk. Henry and Elizabeth had two sons together:

Elizabeth, Henry's first wife, passed away in the 1530s.

Second Marriage and Children

Henry married a second time to Anne Calthorpe. This marriage ended in 1555. They had two children:

  • Egremont Radclyffe (died in 1578). He traveled to Europe after a rebellion in England. He later died in Namur.
  • Lady Frances Radclyffe (died in 1602). She married Sir Thomas Mildmay and had two sons.

Becoming an Earl

Henry's father, Robert Radclyffe, passed away on November 27, 1542. After his father's death, Henry became the new Earl of Sussex. This meant he inherited his father's title and responsibilities.

Knight of the Garter

In 1554, Queen Mary I honored Henry by making him a Knight of the Garter. This is a very special award. It is given to people who have served the country well. Other important people who received this honor at the same time included Philip II of Spain.

Henry Radclyffe passed away on February 17, 1557. He died in Westminster, London.
