Born in 1691, Henry grew up in a prominent family. His father, Robert Shirley, held the title of the 1st Earl Ferrers. Henry's early life was likely shaped by his family's high social standing.

Becoming an Earl

In 1729, Henry Shirley inherited the title of Earl Ferrers. He became the 3rd Earl after his brother, Washington, passed away. This meant he took on important responsibilities and land.

Health Challenges and Recovery

Henry faced a serious mental illness during his life. This condition led his younger brother, Laurence, to take legal steps regarding his care. However, Henry's health improved significantly by October 1730. He was then able to manage his family estates once more.

Public Service and Later Life

In 1731, Henry was well enough to accept important public roles. He became the Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of Staffordshire. These positions involved representing the King in Staffordshire and keeping public records.

A Return to Illness

Sadly, Henry's health declined again later on. He experienced another period of mental illness. Despite this, he remained in his public offices until 1742. During his final years, he received special care due to his health.

Passing and Succession

Henry Shirley passed away in Kensington Gore in 1745. He was 53 years old. After his death, his nephew, Laurence, became the 4th Earl Ferrers.
