Early Life and Education

Henry Whitaker was born around 1622. His father was William Whitaker, who was also involved in politics and came from a town called Shaftesbury. His mother was Honor Hooper.

When he was young, Henry went to study law. In 1636, he joined the Middle Temple, which is one of the famous schools for lawyers in London. The next year, in 1637, he also studied at Gloucester Hall, Oxford, a part of the famous Oxford University. He worked hard and became a qualified lawyer in 1645.

A Career in Law and Public Service

After his father passed away in 1646, Henry took over the family's affairs. He bought land in a place called Motcombe, near Shaftesbury, in 1648 and continued to buy more property over the years.

In 1661, he was re-elected as an MP for Shaftesbury in what was known as the Cavalier Parliament. He also helped oversee local councils as a commissioner for corporations from 1662 to 1663. In 1662, he became a freeman of Lyme Regis, which meant he had special rights in that town. He was also involved in checking on people who didn't follow the official church rules in 1675.
