Henry of Nassau-Dillenburg

Henry of Nassau (born October 15, 1550, in Dillenburg – died April 14, 1574, in Mook) was a brave young count from the House of Nassau. He was the youngest brother of William I of Orange-Nassau, a very important leader in Dutch history.

Henry was the twelfth and last child of William the Rich and Juliana of Stolberg-Werningerode. He grew up following the Lutheran faith.

Early Life and Education

Henry of Nassau had a good education when he was young. He studied in important cities like Leuven and Strasbourg. These places were known for their universities and learning during his time.

Joining the Army

As a young man, Henry became involved in the conflicts of his time. He and his brothers, William and Louis, joined the Huguenot army. The Huguenots were French Protestants who were fighting for their religious freedom.

Battle of Moncontour

Henry and his brothers fought alongside Louis I de Bourbon, prince de Condé, a leader of the Huguenot forces. They took part in the Battle of Moncontour on October 30, 1569. This was an important battle during the French Wars of Religion.

The Battle of Mookerheyde

Henry's life ended too soon at the battle of Mookerheyde. This battle took place on April 14, 1574. Henry was only 23 years old when he died in this fight. His older brother, Louis, also lost his life in the same battle. Sadly, their bodies were never found after the fighting.
