The Herald Building is a historic five-story building in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was built in 1905 and designed by architect John C. Craig. This building was once home to an important newspaper called The Salt Lake Daily Herald. Today, it is recognized as a special landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Herald Building: A Historic Landmark

The Herald Building stands tall in Salt Lake City. It was designed by John C. Craig, an architect from Chicago. A. & J. McDonald built the building in 1905. It is made of brick and stone.

Building Design and Construction

The building has a unique U-shape. It has two four-story sections, or "wings," on each side. These wings are separated by a narrow open space. You can see stone bands and fancy decorations around the windows. The top of each wing has a tin cornice. This cornice has detailed designs like lion's heads and curved shapes.

The Herald Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it is a special place that is important to history.

When the building was being constructed, a concrete mixer was used. This mixer helped create the concrete foundation. It was one of the first times a concrete mixer was used in Salt Lake City.

The Salt Lake Daily Herald Newspaper

The The Salt Lake Daily Herald was a newspaper that started in 1870. It was founded by William C. Dunbar and Edward L. Sloan. The newspaper stopped printing in 1920.

Around the time the Herald Building was constructed, a rich businessman and politician named William A. Clark owned the newspaper. He was from Montana. Clark also owned another newspaper called the Butte Miner.

In 1904, William A. Clark teamed up with Richard C. Kerens, Thomas Kearns, and David Keith. They formed a company to build projects in Salt Lake City. One of their big projects was the Herald Building, which cost $100,000 to build.

Printing the News: A New Era

In 1905, The Herald newspaper put a special printing press in the basement of the new building. This press was made by R. Hoe & Company. It was very fast and could print many newspapers quickly.

The machine could print 24,000 twelve-page newspapers in just one hour. It could also print 12,000 twenty-four-page newspapers per hour. Before this, the newspaper could only print in black ink. With the new press, The Herald could print in three colors plus black!

On December 31, 1905, The Herald printed the city's first colorful Sunday comics section. This was a big deal for readers.

Who Used the Building?

The Herald newspaper used the building from 1905 to 1913. Later, in 1918, another newspaper called The Salt Lake Telegram rented space there. After that, the building was changed to be used as the Little Hotel.

The Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad also had offices in the Herald Building early on. William A. Clark, who owned The Herald, also owned a lot of shares in this railroad company.

A famous restaurant called Lamb's Grill was in the building for many years. It was there from 1939 until 2017.
