Herbert Richard Byrne (October 28, 1887 – August 3, 1959) was an Australian rules footballer. He played for the Fitzroy team in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was also a very brave soldier who served in two World Wars.
Early Life
Herbert Richard Byrne was born in Richmond, Victoria, on October 28, 1887. His parents were Richard and Olivia Byrne.
Football Career
Herb Byrne first became known for his football skills while playing for Xavier College. In 1907, he played two senior games for the Fitzroy Football Club in the VFL.
A Brave Soldier
Byrne had a long and impressive career in the Australian Army.
World War I Hero
When World War I began, Byrne joined the army as an officer. He served in important battles in Gallipoli and Egypt. In October 1917, he showed incredible bravery near Ypres in Belgium. He saved his men from an exploding shell. Then, he rescued eight injured soldiers. Just six days later, even though he was wounded himself, he stayed with his men for two days. He only left when he was ordered to get medical help. For his actions, he received the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). He was also mentioned in official reports twice for his bravery.
Continued Service
After World War I, Byrne continued to serve as a part-time officer. He was given the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration for his long and excellent service.
World War II
In 1940, Byrne joined the army again for World War II. He served for another four years as a Lieutenant-Colonel.
