Sir Herbert Stanley Oakeley (born 1830, died 1903) was a famous English composer. He is best known for being the Professor of Music at the University of Edinburgh. Before this, he was already known as a great organ player and musician.

At the university, he started many music groups across Scotland. One important group was the Edinburgh University Music Society. He also helped the university's music school become a full Faculty. This meant students could earn music degrees there. He also helped and taught other musicians.

Early Life and Education

Sir Herbert Stanley Oakeley was born in Ealing on July 22, 1830. He was the second son of Sir Herbert Oakeley, 3rd Baronet.

He went to school at Rugby. Later, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford University. He earned his first degree in 1853. He continued his studies there until 1856. He also learned music from a teacher named Stephen Elvey.

Music Career and Achievements

In 1865, Sir Herbert was chosen for an important job. He became the Reid Professor of Music at Edinburgh University. This was a very respected position.

In 1876, he was honored for his work. He was made a knight, so people called him "Sir Herbert." In 1881, he received another special title. He became the "Composer of Music to Queen Victoria in Scotland." This meant he wrote music for the Queen.

In 1901, he received an honorary degree. The University of Glasgow gave him an LL.D. This was during their 450th anniversary celebration.

Sir Herbert retired from his teaching job in 1891. He passed away in Eastbourne on October 26, 1903. He was not married.
