About Herman Bing

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Herman Bing was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. His father, Max Bing, was an opera singer. Herman had three siblings: Gustav, Clara, and Erna. He later married Carla Lichtenstein and they had one daughter.

When he was just 16 years old, Herman started his career in the circus and vaudeville shows. He quickly became known for his funny performances. In 1921, he made his first movie appearance in a film called "Ciska Barna, die Zigeunerin."

Moving to America and Film Success

Before coming to America, Herman worked as a production chief for several films in Germany. In 1923, he moved to the United States with director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. Herman helped Murnau as an interpreter and assistant director.

He also worked with famous directors like John Ford and Frank Borzage. Soon, Herman became a successful character actor. People recognized him for his wide-eyed facial expressions and his strong German accent.

One of his most famous voice roles was for the Ringmaster in Walt Disney's classic animated movie Dumbo (1941). However, when World War II started in Europe, things from Germany became less popular with audiences. Because of this, his German accent was not as much in demand for movie roles after the war.
