A Look Back: History of the Herman House
Building a New Hotel
In 1900, there was only one hotel in Port Hope called the Lease House. A man named Richard Herman saw a chance to build a new one. He built this hotel, and it quickly became more popular than the Lease House.
By 1902, the Lease House had closed its doors. At the same time, plans were being made to bring a railroad line to Port Hope. This would make it much easier for travelers to visit.
Expanding for Travelers
Knowing more visitors would come, Richard Herman made his hotel bigger in 1902 and 1903. The railroad line was finished, bringing in more people. In 1906, Herman sold his hotel to J. H. De Lisle.
Two years later, De Lisle changed the hotel's name to the Lake View Hotel. The Lake View Hotel kept operating with different owners over the years. As of 2017, the building is home to a restaurant called the Port Hope Hotel.
Exploring the Herman House Building
Outside the Building
The Herman House is a two-story building made of red brick. It has a style called Italianate. This means it has certain design features, like decorative brackets under the roof.
A newer part, made of white cinder blocks, was added to the back. The original part of the building from 1900 has special brick lines and columns. A simple, classic-looking border runs along the top.
The windows and doors have rounded tops. They also have raised brick designs above them. A modern wooden porch is at the front of the building.
Inside the Building
On the first floor, you'll find a bar and restaurant area. The second floor has a central hallway. On each side of this hall, there are four sleeping rooms.
