Hermann II was born in 1049 and passed away in 1085. He was a powerful noble known as the Count Palatine of Lotharingia from 1064 to 1085. He also ruled as a count in areas like Ruhrgau, Zulpichgau, and Brabant.
Early Life and Family
Hermann II was likely the son of Henry I of Lotharingia and Mathild of Verdun. His mother, Mathild, was the daughter of Gozelo I of Lotharingia. This means his uncle might have been Pope Stephen IX.
When Hermann was young, he was looked after by Anno II, the Archbishop of Cologne. During this time, Hermann's power and the lands he controlled were made much smaller.
Marriage and Children
In 1080, Hermann II married Adelaide of Weimar-Orlamünde. She was the daughter of Otto of Orlamünde, a count and margrave. Adelaide had been married before.
Hermann and Adelaide had two children together. Sadly, both of their children passed away before 1085.
Later Years and Legacy
Hermann II is thought to be the last Count Palatine of Lotharingia from his family line, the Ezzonian dynasty. He died in 1085 near his castle in Dalhem. He was killed during a duel with Albert III, Count of Namur.
After Hermann's death, his wife Adelaide married again. Her third husband was Henry of Laach. He later became the first Count Palatine of the Rhine. This new title was created between 1085 and 1087.
