Her Musical Journey
Hermene Warlick was born into a musical family. She was the daughter of Jesse W. and Ethel Herman Warlick. Her family had organists for four generations!
She started playing piano and composing at a young age. For eight years, she studied music in Hickory. Her teacher was Alla Pearl Little, a famous composer in North Carolina.
College and Early Career
After her studies in Hickory, Hermene went to college. She attended the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina. This school is now called UNCG.
There, she continued to study piano, harmony, and composition. She earned her degree in music in 1926. She specialized in piano. The next year, in 1927, she also earned a degree in organ.
In 1926, Hermene married George C. Eichhorn. She then started working as an organist. Her first job was at Holy Trinity Church in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Writing and Directing
Hermene also loved to write about music. In 1928, she began writing a weekly column. It was called “Music Notes” and appeared in the Greensboro Daily News.
She became the Choir Director at Holy Trinity Church in 1937. She took over from Wade R. Brown.
Musical Achievements
Hermene Eichhorn was very active in music throughout North Carolina. She was an officer for the Euterpe Club of Greensboro. She also served on the board of the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs.
She was especially good at writing music for women's voices. She also wrote for other groups of singers. Many of her published songs were performed often. She won several awards for her compositions.

Hermene Eichhorn's music had a special style. She used original rhythms and harmonies. She also used folk music ideas in her works. Sometimes, she even used old Church music styles.
Popular Works

One popular cantata was Mary Magdalene. It was published in 1944. Another was Son of the Highest, published in 1946. Both of these were created with poet Rose Myra Phillips. She wrote the words for the music.
Hermene also worked with other poets. She corresponded with James Stephens. He wrote the words for her piece The Daisies. She also worked with Charles Hanson Towne. He wrote the lyrics for While Mary Slept.
