Herring has an interesting past. It wasn't always called Herring.

Early Beginnings: The Town of Weed

This community was first known as Weed. It was officially planned out, or platted, in 1899. The Western Town Lot Company was responsible for mapping out the town.

A New Name: Becoming Herring

In 1901, the community's name changed to Herring. This new name honored a local pioneer settler. Pioneers were some of the first people to settle in a new area.

Life in Herring: Post Office and People

A post office opened in Herring in 1900. This was an important part of any town. It allowed people to send and receive mail. The post office stayed open for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1951. In 1940, Herring had a population of 35 people. This means 35 people called Herring home at that time.
