Sir Hew Dalrymple, Lord North Berwick (1652–1737) was an important Scottish judge and politician. He played a big role in Scotland's legal system and government during his lifetime.

Early Life and Family

Sir Hew Dalrymple was born in 1652. He was the third son of James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount of Stair, who was also a very famous Scottish judge. Sir Hew had several brothers who were also well-known in Scotland.

A Career in Law and Politics

Sir Hew Dalrymple started his career in law. He worked as a Commissary in Edinburgh, which meant he handled legal cases, especially those about families and wills.

He also became a Commissioner in the Parliament of Scotland. This was like being a member of parliament today. He represented the town of New Galloway from 1690, and then North Berwick from 1702.

In 1695, he became the Dean of the Faculty of Advocates. This is a very important position for lawyers in Scotland, like being the head of a major legal group.

Becoming a Lord President

In 1698, Sir Hew was given the special title of baronet. This is a title of honor that can be passed down in a family. In the same year, he became the Lord President of the Court of Session. This was the highest judge in Scotland's main court. He held this important job until he passed away. When he became Lord President, he took the special judicial title of Lord North Berwick.

The Union of Scotland and England

Sir Hew Dalrymple was also involved in a very important event in Scottish history: the union with England. He was a Commissioner for the articles of union between England and Scotland in 1702 and 1703. This treaty joined the two countries to form Great Britain. To remember this big event, he planted special beech trees, and some of them are still alive today!

Tantallon Castle

In 1699, Sir Hew Dalrymple bought Tantallon Castle. This was a very old and famous castle. However, by the time he owned it, the castle was already in ruins, and he allowed it to remain that way.

Family Life

Sir Hew Dalrymple was married twice, first to Marion Hamilton and then to Elizabeth Dundas. He had a large family. One of his sons, also named Sir Hew Dalrymple, later became a judge too, known as Lord Drummore.

Sir Hew Dalrymple passed away in 1737. His grandson, Sir Hew Dalrymple, 2nd Baronet, inherited his baronet title because his eldest son had passed away earlier.
