Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was a Catholic priest who lived from 1753 to 1811. He is celebrated for starting the Mexican War of Independence. On September 16, 1810, he gave a famous speech known as the "Grito de Dolores" (Cry of Dolores). This speech called for people to rise up against Spanish rule. This county is part of the Rio Grande Valley, a fertile area known for its agriculture, especially citrus fruits. It is one of the fastest-growing counties in Texas.
