Hilda Gustafva Sachs (born March 13, 1857, in Norrköping, Sweden – died February 26, 1935) was a very important Swedish journalist, translator, writer, and a strong supporter of women's rights. She worked hard to make things better for women in her time.

Early Life and Education

Hilda was the daughter of Johan Gustaf Engström and Gustafva Augusta Gustafsson. She was born in the city of Norrköping.

When she was younger, Hilda worked as a governess. A governess is like a private teacher who lives with a family. She worked in the countryside for a while.

Becoming a Teacher

Hilda wanted to learn more. She studied at a special teacher's college in Stockholm. This was from 1878 to 1881. After finishing her studies, she went back to teaching.

In 1886, Hilda married Carl Fredrik Sachs. He was a florist, someone who sells flowers.

A Career in Journalism

Sadly, Hilda's husband passed away in 1893. After this, Hilda needed a way to support herself and her children. She decided to become a journalist.

Writing for Newspapers

Hilda started her journalism career in 1895. She wrote for many different newspapers. Some of these included Dagens Nyheter, Nya Dagligt Allehanda, and Svenska Dagbladet. She continued working as a journalist until 1920.

Making History as a Journalist

In 1899, Hilda made history! She was the first woman to be a delegate at an international meeting for journalists. A delegate is a person chosen to represent a group. This big meeting took place in Rome. Hilda represented a Swedish newspaper called NDA there.

Fighting for Women's Rights

Hilda was not just a journalist. She was also a strong feminist. This means she believed in equal rights for women.

Women's Right to Vote

In 1902, Hilda helped start a very important group. It was called the National Association for Women's Suffrage. This group worked to get women the right to vote.

Hilda was a key member of this association. She was on its board of directors from 1912 to 1921. Her work helped women in Sweden gain the right to vote.
