The Story of Hillas Farm

Early Days and Building the Homestead

The land where Hillas Farm stands has been around since 1826. The main house, called the homestead, was built much later, around 1876. It was built by Martha and Matthew Hillas, who were the owners of the property at that time.

Staying in the Family

The Hillas family lived in and cared for the farm for a very long time. It stayed in their family for nearly 80 years! In 1953, the last family member to own it, Evelyn Hillas, passed away when she was 93 years old. She left the farm to a close family friend.

Protecting a Piece of History

Because Hillas Farm Homestead is so important to history, it was given a special protection status. In June 1984, a "Permanent Conservation Order" was put in place. This order helps make sure that the homestead and its buildings are preserved and looked after. It means they cannot be easily changed or destroyed, keeping their history alive.

What Hillas Farm Looks Like

The main house at Hillas Farm is a four-bedroom home. It was built using a method called lathe and plaster. This is an old way of building walls using thin strips of wood (lath) covered with plaster. Besides the main house, there are also several other smaller buildings on the property. These are called outbuildings and might have been used for things like storage, farming, or housing animals.
