How Hillsong UK Started
The church began in 1992. It was started by Gerard and Sue Keehan. They came from the Hills Christian Life Centre in Sydney, Australia. At first, it was called the London Christian Life Centre. In the year 2000, its name changed to Hillsong Church London.
From 2000 to 2002, Hillsong London held its services in different places. These included theatres and university halls across London. By late 2004, they were meeting at the Mermaid Conference and Events Centre. They held seven services every weekend there. After that, they moved to the Dominion Theatre. This theatre can hold about 2,200 people. They held four services there every Sunday.
In August 2005, Hillsong London started holding services outside of London. They began in Leatherhead, Surrey. In 2011, they also started services in Tonbridge, Kent.
In 2006, Hillsong London held its first big event. It was called the Hillsong Conference Europe. About 3,000 people came to the Excel Centre in East London for it.
On September 13, 2009, Hillsong London held a special service. It was at The O2 Arena. This celebrated ten years of the church in London. In 2013, they started the Warehouse Project. This was near the Millwall FC stadium, The Den.
Hillsong London also hosts a special Christmas event. It is called "Carols at Wembley Arena." This event is held at the SSE Arena, Wembley. In 2015, all the tickets for this event were sold out.
In 2019, a new church group started in Croydon. Around 600 people attended this new location.
