Hillsong Church UK is a large Christian church in the United Kingdom. It is part of the global Hillsong Church family. This church is known for its lively worship style. It started in London in 1992 and was first called the London Christian Life Centre. Later, it became known as Hillsong London.

The Story of Hillsong UK

How Hillsong UK Began

Hillsong Church UK started in 1992. It was founded by Gerard and Sue Keehan. They came from the Hills Christian Life Centre in Sydney, Australia. The church was first named the London Christian Life Centre. In the year 2000, its name changed to Hillsong Church London.

Finding Places to Meet

From 2000 to 2002, Hillsong London held its services in different places. These included theatres in London's West End and university halls. By late 2004, the church had been meeting at the Mermaid Conference and Events Centre for two years. They held seven services there every weekend! After that, they moved to the Dominion Theatre. This theatre can hold about 2,200 people. At the Dominion Theatre, they held four services every Sunday.

Growing Across England

In August 2005, Hillsong London began holding services in Leatherhead, Surrey. This area is southwest of London. In 2011, services also started in Tonbridge, Kent, which is southeast of London.

Big Events and Gatherings

In 2006, Hillsong London brought 3,000 people together. This was for the first Hillsong Conference Europe. It took place at the Excel Centre in East London. On September 13, 2009, Hillsong London held a special service. It was at The O2 Arena to celebrate ten years of the church in London. In 2013, the church started the Warehouse Project. This project is located near Millwall FC's stadium, called The Den.

Hillsong London has also hosted a special Christmas event. It is called "Carols at Wembley Arena." This event has been very popular. In 2015, all the tickets for the event were sold out.

Church Locations and Numbers

By 2017, the church was doing very well. It had an annual income of over £18 million. Hillsong Church UK is registered as a charity. This means it helps people and is overseen by the Charity Commission. The church has 12 locations across the UK. Most of these are in England, but one is in Edinburgh, Scotland. The church uses rented buildings for its services. In 2016, about 2,000 people attended services at the Dominion Theatre. In 2019, a new church group started in Croydon. Around 600 people attended this new group.

Leadership Changes

In February 2021, new pastors were appointed for Hillsong London. Tim and Nicola Douglass took on these roles. They had previously been part of the Melbourne Hillsong church. They took over from Gary and Cathy Clarke.
