The great seahorse (Hippocampus kelloggi), also called Kellogg's seahorse, is a special type of fish. It belongs to the same family as pipefishes, called Syngnathidae. This seahorse is one of the biggest among the 54 known seahorse species.

Where the Great Seahorse Lives

The great seahorse lives in the Indo-Pacific region. You can find it from the coast of East Africa all the way to Japan. Recently, it has also been seen near northern and southern Australia.

These seahorses love places with lots of coral. They use their tails to hold onto the coral, which helps them stay in one spot. While they are often found in shallow waters, they can also live very deep. Some have been seen more than 100 meters (about 330 feet) below the surface. The deepest one ever found was 152 meters (about 500 feet) down!

What the Great Seahorse Looks Like

The great seahorse has a head that looks a bit like a crown. Its spine is easy to see, but it has a rounded shape, especially above its eye.

Sometimes, people confuse this seahorse with other types. Some great seahorses were even thought to be completely new species! However, scientists used gene sequencing to show they were all the same. You can often tell them apart by their unusually high tail rings. Their tails are also a bit longer than other seahorses, making up about 57% of their body length. This seahorse is usually pale in color and feels smooth if you touch it. In the wild, they typically live for about two to four years.

Life Cycle and Reproduction

Male great seahorses are the ones who carry the eggs in special pouches. After a few weeks, the male releases the baby seahorses. He doesn't look after them once they are born. Usually, males are ready to breed again very quickly after giving birth.

We don't know a lot about the great seahorse's exact breeding habits. But, scientists have studied other seahorse species that are related to them. These studies show that some seahorses stay with one partner for life. During their mating ritual, seahorses twist their tails and nod their heads until they find a partner. Even though the males carry the young, they are also the main ones who compete for mates. This might be because there are more males than females in some seahorse groups.

How Many Great Seahorses Are There?

The great seahorse lives across a very large area. Because of this, it's hard for scientists to know exactly how many there are. However, people have been seeing fewer great seahorses lately. This makes scientists think that their numbers are going down. For example, in Asia, the population has dropped by 50-60%.

These seahorses are usually found alone or in very small groups. Because their numbers are decreasing, the great seahorse is considered vulnerable. This means they are just one step away from being endangered, which is a serious concern for their future.

Why People Use Great Seahorses

Like many other seahorse species, the great seahorse is used by humans in a few ways. They are sometimes kept in aquariums, and they are also used in traditional medicine.

It can be quite difficult to buy and care for a great seahorse in an aquarium. They are large and don't compete well for food with other fish, which often leads to them dying early. A big reason why great seahorses are taken from the wild is for their use in medicine, especially in China and other East Asian countries. More great seahorses have been sold for this purpose in recent years.

Besides aquariums and medicine, the great seahorse is also sold as a souvenir. People often buy them dried to take home. All these uses combined have led to the great seahorse being labeled as vulnerable.

How the Great Seahorse Got its Name

The specific name of this seahorse, kelloggi, honors an American scientist. His name was Vernon Lyman Kellogg (1867-1937). He was an entomologist, which means he studied insects, and an evolutionary biologist, who studied how living things change over time.
