Tangier facts for kids
Tangier is a lively city in northern Morocco. It's home to about 700,000 people (as of 2008). This city sits right on the coast of North Africa, at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. This is a special spot where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, near Cape Spartel. Tangier is the main city of the Tangier-Tetouan Region and the Tangier-Asilah area in Morocco, close to the border with Spain.
A Glimpse into Tangier's Past
Tangier has a very long and interesting history, going back to the 5th century BC. Many different groups of people and cultures have lived here over time. From being an ancient Phoenician town to gaining independence in the 1950s, Tangier was often a welcoming place for various cultures.
In 1923, something unique happened: Tangier was given "international status" by foreign powers. This meant it became a special zone, managed by several countries together. Because of this, many Europeans, Americans, and people from India came to live or visit Tangier.
Tangier Today: A City on the Rise
Today, Tangier is growing and changing very quickly. There are many new projects happening around the city. You can see new 5-star hotels being built along the bay. There's also a modern business area called Tangier City Centre.
The city has a new airport terminal and a new soccer stadium. Tangier's economy is also getting a big boost from the new Tanger-Med port. This port is one of the largest in Africa and helps connect Morocco to the rest of the world through trade.
