The Hodges House is a really old and special home located in Taunton, Massachusetts. It was built around 1850, which means it's over 170 years old! This house is a great example of a building style called Greek Revival. It's so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This list helps protect important historical places.

Exploring the Hodges House

The Hodges House is in a quiet, country-like part of northwestern Taunton. It sits on Worcester Street, not far from Norton Road. This house is a "Cape style" home, which means it's one and a half stories tall.

What Does It Look Like?

The house has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a "side gable roof." Its outside walls are covered with wooden boards called "clapboards." You'll notice a chimney that's a little off-center on the roof.

The front of the house has five sections, called "bays." There are two windows on each side of the main door. The front door itself is quite fancy! It has tall, narrow windows on either side, called "sidelight windows." There are also flat, decorative columns, called "pilasters," next to the door. Above the door is a decorative band, known as an "entablature."

Special Details and Design

The corners of the house also have these flat pilasters. They go all the way up to another entablature that runs across the front of the house, just under the roof.

On the right side of the main house, there's a smaller, one-and-a-half-story section that sticks out. It also has its own chimney. This part of the house has a porch that's set back a bit, supported by a square column. On the porch, you'll find another entrance and two windows.

Why Is It Important?

The Hodges House was built around 1850. It was probably built for someone from the Hodges family. This family owned a lot of land in the area back then.

What makes this house so special is that it still looks almost exactly like it did when it was built! It has kept nearly all of its original Greek Revival features. This makes it one of the best examples of this building style in all of Taunton.
