The Hohberger Building is a historic building in Des Moines, Iowa. It is located in an area called the East Village. This building was constructed in 1895. It is special because it is one of the few buildings left in Des Moines that uses a cast-iron column structure. This means its main supports are made of strong iron columns.

About the Hohberger Building

The Hohberger Building is a great example of Late Victorian style. This style was popular in the late 1800s. The building was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The National Register lists places that are important to American history.

Early History and Use

The first business to open in the Hohberger Building was a dry goods store. This store was called Dockstader & Co. It operated from 1899 to 1915. After that, the building was empty for several years.

Modern Life of the Building

In 1999, the Hohberger Building was renovated. This means it was repaired and updated. Today, the ground floor of the building is still used for shops. The floors above are used for offices.
