The Hollywood Woman's Club is an old building in Hollywood, Florida. It's located at 501 North 14th Avenue. This special place was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the United States on February 10, 1995. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.

The Club Building

The Hollywood Woman's Club building was built in 1927. It is a one-story building made of wood. It has a front roof that slopes down on two sides, like a triangle. The building is shaped like a rectangle and measures about 53 feet by 31 feet. It sits on a foundation made of concrete blocks. The roof is held up by strong wooden beams and covered with asphalt shingles.

Outside the Building

The main entrance is on the west side, facing North 14th Avenue. There's a concrete porch with three steps leading up to the front doors. These are double doors with slats, and they are surrounded by windows. Above the doors, there's a special fan-shaped window with seven panels. This window frames a sign that shows the club's name.

The front of the building has a classic look, with columns and decorative elements. There are two windows on each side of the main door. These windows have green shutters with cool cutouts: a full moon on top and a crescent moon on the bottom. The north and south sides of the building each have four windows. The back of the building has three windows.

The building is painted white and has horizontal wooden boards called clapboard. The bottom part of the walls is covered with asbestos shingles. The porches and the roof are painted green.

Inside the Building

When you walk through the front doors, you enter the main assembly room. This large room is about 40 feet deep and 30 feet wide. The walls are smooth white plaster. The wooden frames around the doors are also white.

On the east side of the room, there's a podium area. This area is special because it has a framed panel made of seven wooden boards, each about 12 inches wide and 48 inches tall. The back part of the building, about 11 feet deep, is divided into two equal sections. One section is a kitchen, and the other is a dressing and storage room.

Changes Over Time

The building has had some changes since it was first built. The original front doors were different, with ten glass panels each. There used to be decorative lattice work next to the columns at the front, but that has been removed. The old windows, which could be opened from both top and bottom, have been replaced with aluminum windows that open outwards.

A part of the back wall was rebuilt, but it still looks the same from the outside. One of the back windows was replaced with a door that leads to a small porch. In 1944, the kitchen was updated with a new electric refrigerator and a gas stove. The original wooden ceiling is still there, but it's now hidden by a suspended ceiling. The main room has carpet, the bathrooms have new tiles, and a dishwasher was added to the kitchen. The walls and ceilings have also been refreshed.

The Club's Location

The land where the club stands, and the area around it called Hollywood Lakes, was created using dirt dug up from two man-made lakes. These lakes were part of the plan to develop the area. The club's outdoor space has hedges, palm trees, bushes, and an open grassy lawn.

The building was first planned to look like the homes in the neighborhood. However, because of money problems, a simpler wooden building was built instead. It still had a fancy front that looked like classic architecture. The land for the club was a double lot, and it was given to the Hollywood Woman's Club by Joseph W. Young. He was the person who founded the city of Hollywood.

The woman's club started in 1922, around the same time the city was just beginning. The club worked closely with the city's founders and played a very important part in the early growth of Hollywood.
