The Holmes-Crafts Homestead is a very old and special house in Jay, Maine. It's located where Old Jay Hill Road meets Main Street (Maine State Route 4). This house was built a long time ago, in the early 1800s. It's a great example of a building style called Federal architecture.

This historic home was once owned by James Starr. He was one of the first people to settle in the area. He was also a well-known lawyer and a local politician. A politician is someone who helps make rules and decisions for a town or state. Today, the local historical society owns the house. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This means it's an important historical site.

About the Holmes-Crafts Homestead

What Does It Look Like?

The Holmes-Crafts Homestead is a two-story house. It is made of wood. It has a special roof shape called a hip roof. There are two chimneys at the back of the house. A smaller section, called an ell, extends from the back. This ell has a gable roof.

The house still has many of its original parts. This includes the old wooden siding, called clapboards. The windows are also original. The main front door has a special design. It has small windows on the sides. There is also a carved panel above the door. Inside, you can see wide pine floors. The door and window handles are also original.

Who Lived Here?

We know this house was standing by 1820. That year, James Starr bought it. James Starr was a lawyer and a surveyor. A surveyor measures land. He was one of the first white settlers in the Jay Hill area. He arrived there in 1802.

Mr. Starr also ran a tavern nearby. A tavern was a place where people could eat, drink, and stay. He was also the town's first postmaster. This meant he was in charge of the mail. He also represented Jay in the state government.

In 1833, Aruna Holmes bought the property. Aruna Holmes was James Starr's son-in-law. He was a cabinetmaker. He had a workshop that was connected to the house's ell. That workshop is not there anymore.

Today, the Jay Historical Society owns the house. You can visit it by making an appointment.
