Homepride is a well-known British food brand. It makes popular cooking sauces. Another company, Kerry Group, uses the Homepride name for flour. So, Homepride is famous for both sauces and flour!
The Story of Homepride
Homepride flour first appeared in 1920. A big change in how flour was made happened in 1963. This new way meant bakers did not need to sift their flour anymore. This special new flour was sold under the Homepride brand by a company called Spillers.
Later, in 1974, Homepride started making prepared cooking sauces. These sauces made cooking easier for many families. In October 1979, a company called Dalgety plc bought Spillers.
Over time, parts of the company changed hands. The flour business was sold to Allied Bakeries. Then, in January 2000, Allied Bakeries sold the Homepride flour brand to Kerry Group. Kerry Group still makes Homepride flour today.
Dalgety kept the rights for the cooking sauces. The Homepride sauce brand was later bought by the Campbell Soup Company. Homepride sauces even sponsored the TV show The Bill for a while. Their slogan back then was "the one with the bag." In July 2006, Premier Foods bought the Homepride sauce brand. Premier Foods still owns the sauce brand now.
Meet Homepride Fred
Homepride uses a fun cartoon character named "Fred the Flour Grader" in its advertising. Fred helps people remember the brand. He was created by an advertising company called Geers Gross in 1964.
Since 1965, Fred has been part of the slogan, "Because graded grains make finer flour." Famous voice actors like John Le Mesurier and Richard Briers have given Fred his voice.
In March 2014, Premier Foods brought Fred back for new TV adverts. He appeared to promote the Homepride range of cooking sauces. Fred is a very well-known character in British advertising.
