Honmei choco (pronounced HOHN-may CHO-koh) is a special kind of chocolate given in Japan. The name means "true feeling chocolate." Girls and women give this chocolate to boys and men they have romantic feelings for. This usually happens on Valentine's Day, which is February 14th.
This chocolate is often given to boyfriends, husbands, or someone a girl really likes. Honmei choco is usually nicer and costs more than giri choco. Giri choco means "obligation chocolate" and is given to male friends or coworkers without any romantic feelings.
Homemade honmei choco is also very popular. Many people like to make their own special chocolates to show their true feelings.
White Day: The Return Gift
There is a special day in Japan called White Day. It is celebrated on March 14th, exactly one month after Valentine's Day. On White Day, men who received honmei choco on Valentine's Day give gifts back to the women.
These gifts are often candy or other presents. The idea is to show thanks and return the feelings.
