Honour (spelled honor in the United States) is a big idea about how people see you. It's about being trusted and respected by others because of your actions. Think of it as your good name or reputation.

The idea of honour has changed a lot over time and in different places. What was considered honourable in one country might be different in another.

What is Honour?

Honour is about earning respect and trust from your community. It means doing what is right, even when it's hard. When you act with honour, people see you as someone they can rely on. It's about having strong moral values and sticking to them.

For a long time, honour was super important, especially for leaders and warriors.

Knights and Chivalry

In Europe during the Middle Ages, knights followed a special set of rules called the Code of Chivalry. This code was all about honour. It taught knights to be brave, loyal, and fair. They had to protect the weak and always tell the truth. Breaking this code would bring shame upon a knight and his family.

Samurai and Bushido

In Japan, a similar idea existed for samurai warriors. Their code was called Bushido. Bushido meant "the way of the warrior." It focused on courage, loyalty, self-discipline, and respect. A samurai's honour was more important than his own life.

Duelling for Honour

In some parts of history, especially in Europe, people would fight duels to defend their honour. If someone felt insulted or their reputation was questioned, they might challenge the other person to a duel. This was a serious fight, often with swords or pistols. It was a way to show bravery and protect one's good name. Luckily, duelling is not common anymore!
