The Hooker Apartments is a big apartment building. It's located in Springfield, Massachusetts, at the corner of Main and Greenwich Streets. This building was constructed in 1908. It's special because it's one of the few old apartment buildings that survived big changes in the city. In 2013, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site.

About the Hooker Apartments

The Hooker Apartments building is found in the Memorial Square area of Springfield. This neighborhood is just north of the city's downtown. The building has four stories and is made of brick and brownstone. It has 23 apartments inside, making it one of the larger apartment buildings in its area.

Building Design and Features

The outside of the building uses golden brick with brownstone details. It has two curved sections on each side that stick out a bit. The building is shaped like the letter "L". There's a driveway and parking lot behind it.

There are three main doors to the building. Two of these doors are on Main Street, and one is on Greenwich Street. Each entrance has brownstone pillars and a triangular shape above it. On the ground floor, at the corner, there's a small space for a shop. Each floor has six apartments, except for the first floor. The first floor has five apartments because the shop takes up one space.

History of the Apartments

The Hooker Apartments were built in 1908. Two people named William Dexter and Joseph Angers had them built. The building was designed by an architect named Arsidas "Albert" Ostiguy. It was named after Josiah Hooker, who was an important leader in Springfield from 1796 to 1870.

At the time, the North End of Springfield was growing very fast. Many large apartment buildings were built there in the early 1900s. By the late 1950s, many homes in the area were getting old and run down. Because of this, many buildings were torn down in the 1960s and 1970s. This was part of a city plan to make the area new again.

Modern Updates

The Hooker Apartments building was fixed up a lot in 2010. Before that, it had been neglected for many years. It had also been damaged by people and by a fire in 2004. The fire affected some of the apartments on the south side of the building. The 2010 repairs helped bring the building back to good condition.
