Hopetown Carriage Works, also known as the Stockton and Darlington Railway Carriage Works, is a historic building in Hopetown, near Darlington, England. It was built in 1853 by the Stockton and Darlington Railway. For many years, it was a busy factory where railway carriages were made. Today, this important building is preserved and used as a museum workshop.

About the Building

The Hopetown Carriage Works was designed by Joseph Spark. Architects Ross & Richardson of Darlington finished the plans. The building is made from strong stone blocks and has a roof of Welsh slate. It features a two-story middle section with a fancy entrance in the Venetian style. On each side of the middle section, there are two single-story wings.

A Look Back at Its History

This building was originally used to build and fix railway carriages. These were usually two-axle carriages. Inside, there were two railway tracks running the whole length of the building. These tracks connected to the main railway network using small turntables in the central part of the building. The central area also had equipment for lifting heavy parts, which was later removed.

Building new carriages at this site stopped around 1884. This was because railway companies started using longer carriages with bogies (special wheel sets). The Hopetown Works was not set up to build these new, longer vehicles. After 1863, all carriage making moved to the York Railway Works under the NER.

After it stopped making carriages, the building was used for other things. It became a storage area and a place to repair wagons. The railway company even used part of it as a rifle range for target practice.

In the 1980s, the local government, Darlington Borough Council, bought the site. It then became part of the Darlington Railway Centre and Museum. The building was officially recognized as a Grade II listed building in 1986. This means it is a special building that needs to be protected.

What Happens There Now

Since 1995, the east wing of the building has been used by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust. This group is famous for building a new steam locomotive called 60163 Tornado. The North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) took over the west wing in 2002.

Another new steam locomotive, the LNER Class P2, is also being built here by the same people who created Tornado. However, in 2023, after 28 years of building steam locomotives, the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust moved to a new location in Darlington.
