The Horace Munroe House is a historic home located at 123 Pleasant Street in Auburn, Maine. It was built a long time ago, between 1899 and 1900. A famous architect named William R. Miller designed it. This house is a great example of the beautiful Queen Anne style of architecture in Auburn. Because it's so special, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Today, you can even stay there! It's known as the Munroe Inn, a cozy bed and breakfast.
The Munroe House: A Look Inside
The Munroe House sits in a quiet neighborhood not far from downtown Auburn. You can find it where Pleasant Street and Drummond Street meet. It's a big, two-and-a-half-story wooden house. It looks a bit like a puzzle because of all its different parts. These parts include many gables (the triangular parts of a roof), porches, and sections that stick out. This unique look is a key part of the Queen Anne style.
A porch with a sloped roof stretches across the front of the house. It has groups of fancy columns that look like old Greek designs. A section with a pointed roof sticks out a little above the front steps. On the left side of the house, facing Drummond Street, there are two round tower-like sections. One of these has an open porch on the second floor. It also has columns supporting a decorated band around the top.
Who Lived Here?
The house was designed by William R. Miller, an architect from Lewiston. It was built for Horace Munroe's mother in 1899-1900. Horace Munroe lived in this house for most of his life. His father, Noble Munroe, was very important to Auburn's history. He helped start the shoe manufacturing business in the city. Making shoes was a huge industry in Auburn back then.
The Munroe family sold the house in the 1950s. For a while, it was used as a boarding house, where people could rent rooms. Since 1999, it has been used off and on as a bed and breakfast. This means visitors can stay overnight and enjoy a meal, just like at the Munroe Inn today.
