Horton is a small, unincorporated community in northern Vernon County, Missouri, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Horton is located right on U.S. Route 71, which is a major highway. It's about eight miles (13 kilometers) north of a larger town called Nevada.
History of Horton
Horton likely began to grow when the railroad tracks were built through the area. Railroads were very important for connecting communities and moving goods in the late 1800s. The community officially received its name in 1890. It's thought that Horton was named after someone who worked for the railroad company.
A post office, which is a place where mail is handled, was opened in Horton in 1891. This post office served the people living in and around Horton for many years. It stayed open for over a century before finally closing its doors in 1996.
