The Hotel Constance is a famous historic hotel located on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California. It was built a long time ago, in 1926, and has a very interesting history and unique design. Today, it's still a beautiful place to visit or stay.

Building a Grand Hotel

The Hotel Constance was built in the second half of 1926. It was a big project that cost about $1 million, which was a huge amount of money back then! The hotel was built on land that was leased for 20 years by a company called Orndorff Hotel Company.

Opening Its Doors

The hotel officially opened its doors in December 1929. It had 164 guest rooms ready for visitors. Imagine how exciting it must have been to stay in such a new and grand hotel!

Design and Architecture

The Hotel Constance is a seven-story building made of strong, reinforced concrete. It was designed by an architect named McNeal Swasey from Los Angeles. He gave the hotel a special look by mixing two old styles: Romanesque and modified Mediterranean designs.

Special Decorations

The outside of the hotel has many cool details. Near the top, there's a decorative band called a frieze. This frieze has stone panels carved with images of angels and griffins, which are mythical creatures that look like a mix of an eagle and a lion. The building also features beautiful wrought iron (shaped metal) and cast stone (molded stone) decorations. You can even spot images of centaurs, which are mythical beings that are half-human and half-horse, along with other fantasy creatures.

How the Hotel Got Its Name

The hotel was named after a woman named Constance G. L. Perry. She bought the property where the hotel stands in March 1926. Later, in 1930, she sold the property to another hotel owner, J. Monroe Procter.

The Hotel Today

In the 2010s, the Hotel Constance got a big makeover and was expanded. It is now run by a company called Dusit International and is known as the Hotel Constance DusitD2 Pasadena.

A Modern Look

The inside of the hotel was redecorated with a very modern and colorful style. People have described it as "an amazing pop of techno Thai culture" because it uses bold colors and smooth, flowing shapes.

Awards and Recognition

The Hotel Constance has been recognized for its history and beauty. In 2015, it received a special award for preservation from the city of Pasadena. The next year, in 2016, it was added to the National Registry of the Historic Hotels of America. This means it's officially recognized as an important historic hotel in the United States!
