The Hotel Metropole is a historic building located in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. It first opened its doors in 1912 as a grand hotel. Today, it has a new life as a unique place that combines a hotel with a modern art museum.

The Hotel Metropole's Story
The Hotel Metropole was designed by architects Joseph G. Steinkamp & Brother. It was built in a style called Neoclassical, which means it looks like old Greek and Roman buildings. When it first opened in 1912, it was a tall, 10-story hotel.
Early Years as a Hotel
For many years, the Hotel Metropole welcomed guests to Cincinnati. It was a busy place in the heart of the city. In 1924, an 11th floor was added to the building. This new floor included a special penthouse apartment.
Changes Over Time
Like many old buildings, the Hotel Metropole changed over the years. In 1971, it was no longer a regular hotel. Instead, it was changed into housing for people with lower incomes. The first floor of the building still had shops and restaurants.
Becoming a Museum Hotel
In June 2009, the Hotel Metropole was recognized as an important historic place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list helps protect special buildings across the country. Later that same year, exciting news was announced. The building would become a 21c Museum Hotel. This meant it would be a hotel and an art museum all in one!
The new 21c Museum Hotel has 156 guest rooms. It also has a large art museum with over 8,000 square feet of space. Visitors can enjoy a restaurant and meeting areas too. It's a great example of how old buildings can find new and exciting uses.
