The Hotel Turkey is a famous old hotel in Turkey, Texas, United States. It first opened its doors in 1927. This special building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 24, 1991. This means it's recognized as an important historical place.

A Look at Hotel Turkey's History

How the Hotel Was Built

The Hotel Turkey is a two-story building made of reddish-brown bricks. It was designed in a style called Prairie School. This style often features strong horizontal lines and open spaces. H. B. Jordan built the hotel. He wanted to use the new Fort Worth and Denver South Plains Railway line coming to Turkey.

Building the hotel wasn't easy. On June 12, 1927, a powerful tornado hit the town. The hotel was still being built, but the tornado knocked it down. Even after this setback, construction started again very quickly. The Hotel Turkey finally opened for business in November 1927.

A Hub for the Community

The hotel was built just three blocks from the train station. This made it a perfect spot for traveling salespeople. They would use a special meeting room to show their goods to the people of Turkey.

The Hotel Turkey also became a very important social center. Many fun events happened there. People held dances, banquets, and meetings for clubs and groups. These events often took place in the hotel's dining room and lobby. It was a lively place where everyone gathered.

New Owners and Special Guests

Over the years, the Hotel Turkey has had several different owners. But it has always stayed open since it first started. In September 1988, Scott and Jane Johnson bought the hotel. They worked hard to make it look new again. After their renovations, the hotel had 14 rooms. Each room had a fun theme, like patriotic, western, or movie themes. One famous room was the Gone With the Wind suite.

In July 2015, Pat and Tina Carson became the new owners. They are from Turkey and have continued to make many improvements to the hotel.

The Hotel Turkey is also well-known for hosting musicians. These musicians come to Turkey every year for the Bob Wills Day celebration. This special event happens on the last Saturday in April. A very famous person, George W. Bush, once stayed at the hotel. He visited when he was the governor of Texas.
