The Houen Foundation Award (called Houens fonds diplom in Norwegian) is Norway's most important award for amazing buildings. It was started in 1893 by a kind and successful businessman named Anton Christian Houen (1823–1894). He set up many special funds to help culture and research in Norway.
What is the Houen Foundation Award?
The Houen Foundation Award is given to buildings that are "outstanding, independently completed works of architecture." This means the award celebrates truly special and well-designed buildings. It recognizes the very best work an architect can do.
Who Gives the Award?
The award is given by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture. They get advice from the board of the Association of Norwegian Architects (which is called Norske arkitekters landsforbund). They also work with the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design to choose the winners.
