About the House at 526 Prospect Street

This historic house is found in a neighborhood in eastern Methuen. It sits at the corner of Prospect Street and Florence Road. Prospect Street is a very old road. It has been on town maps for a long time as an important route.

What Does the House Look Like?

The house is a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, like a triangle. There is a chimney in the middle of the house. The outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboard siding. The foundation, which is the base of the house, is made of strong granite stone.

The main front of the house faces south. It has five sections, or bays, for windows and doors. Another side of the house faces east toward the road. The corners of the building have flat, column-like decorations. These decorations go up to a decorative band that goes all around the house. On the eastern side, the triangular part of the roof is also decorated in a special way.

Both the front and side doorways are fancy. They have decorative frames above them. They also have small windows above the doors, called transom windows. The side entrance even has tall, narrow windows on either side of the door, called sidelights.

History of the Prospect Street House

The house was built around 1840. This area of Methuen started to grow early in the city's history. This was because it was on a main road that led to the old town center. The house at 526 Prospect Street is one of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture in Methuen.

The first people who lived in this house were probably farmers. They would have grown food and other products. Then, they would have taken their goods to sell in the busier parts of Methuen and Lawrence.
