This building is a great example of the types of homes people lived in during that time in Vermont. It still has many cool features from the Colonial Revival style, like its unique metal siding. Because it's so well-preserved and important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the year 2000. This means it's recognized as a significant historical place in the United States.
Exploring 68 Highland Avenue
Highland Avenue is a main road that connects downtown Newport to the towns west of it. Number 68 is located at the corner of Highland Avenue and West End Avenue. This area is mostly residential, meaning it's full of homes.
What Does This Historic Building Look Like?
This building is made of wood and has three stories. It sits on a hill, so you can see most of its basement level from three sides. The roof is flat. The outside of the building is covered with its original pressed metal siding. This type of siding was common back then, but it's rare to see it still in place today!
The front of the building, which faces the street, has a decorative top part called a "false-front corniced parapet." This makes the building look taller than it actually is. The front has three main sections, called bays. Most of these sections have windows. The entrance to the building is on the ground floor, in the section on the right. The sections on the far right also form an enclosed porch and staircase that go up all three stories. These areas have many windows and wooden siding between the floors. Inside, the building still has its original wooden details and finishes.
Why Was This Building Constructed?
The building at 68 Highland Avenue was built because Newport's industries were growing quickly in the early 1900s. More and more people were moving to the city for jobs, and they needed places to live. This area was known as a working-class neighborhood back then. This means that the first people who lived in 68 Highland Avenue usually worked in the factories and businesses of Newport. The building helped provide homes for these workers and their families.
