History of the Houston Forward Times
How the Newspaper Began
Julius Carter started the Houston Forward Times newspaper in 1960. He wanted the Forward Times to be a special paper. It would give the Black community news that was important to them. Many issues affecting the Black community were often ignored by other newspapers. The Forward Times became a main source for this important information.
Leadership Changes Over Time
Julius Carter passed away in 1971. His wife, Lenora Carter, then took over running the newspaper. The Forward Times Publishing Company began publishing it in 1977. Lenora continued to publish and edit the newspaper for many years, even into the 1990s.
The newspaper's circulation was about 17,970 copies in the 1990s.
Lenora Carter passed away on April 10, 2010. Today, Karen Carter Richards is the CEO and Publisher of the Forward Times. She is the daughter of Julius and Lenora Carter.
Helping Students: The Scholarship Foundation
In September 2010, the Julius and Lenora Carter Scholarship and Youth Foundation was created. This foundation helps high school seniors and college students. It supports those from low or medium-income families in the Greater Houston area. The foundation also offers internships for students at the Forward Times Publishing Company. This helps young people learn about the newspaper business.
Celebrating Milestones
On October 2, 2015, the Forward Times celebrated a big milestone. It marked 55 years of being in print. The newspaper celebrated "reporting the truth, and giving back to the community." They had a special cover story and a benefit concert. Money raised from the concert went to the Julius and Lenora Carter Scholarship and Youth Foundation.
