What's Inside Houston Sports Park?
The main building at Houston Sports Park has a few important areas. One part is called Athlete Training + Health. This is a large space where athletes can train and get stronger.
Another part is the Methodist Center for Sports Medicine. This center helps athletes get better when they are hurt. Doctors for the Houston Dynamo, Texans, Astros, Rodeo, and Ballet work here. The center has a special HydroWorx 1200 pool. This pool has an underwater treadmill to help athletes recover. The Houston Dynamo also has its own training center inside the building.
Future Plans for the Park
The part of the park that is open now is called Phase One. It was built starting in 2011. There are plans to make the park even bigger. This next part is called Phase Two.
Phase Two will add seven more sports fields with lights. It will also have new restrooms, misting stations, and picnic areas. There will be trails for walking and a playground for kids. More parking spaces will also be added. This next phase is expected to cost about $12 million.
History of Houston Sports Park
How the Park Was Planned
In 2005, a soccer team moved to Houston. They became the Houston Dynamo. The team's owners wanted a permanent stadium and a training place. While they worked on building what is now BBVA Compass Stadium, they also planned Houston Sports Park.
At first, people thought about using the Gus Wortham Golf Course for the park. But Houston Mayor Bill White and councilwoman Carol Alvarado did not agree with this idea. So, they looked for another location. By late 2007, the city started looking at undeveloped land in south Houston.
Building the Park
In 2008, the City of Houston bought land near Houston Community College. They planned it as the "Houston Amateur Sports Park." On June 25, 2008, the city and the Houston Dynamo announced the park plans. It would be a 100-acre park with 18 fields.
The next day, Mayor Bill White and other city officials held a public event. In December 2009, the city gave a $4.2 million contract to build a new part of Kirby Drive through the park.
In November 2011, the City of Houston created a group called the "Houston Amateur Sports Park LGC." This group was made to build, manage, and run the Sports Park. It helps make sure the park is used for sports and training for everyone. In May 2014, the city bought 32 more acres to add to the park.
New Stadium for Rugby
On February 7, 2018, the City of Houston agreed to help pay for Aveva Stadium. This stadium was built at Houston Sports Park for the Houston SaberCats rugby team. The city gave $3.2 million for the stadium.
Aveva Stadium was finished in April 2019. It can hold 4,000 people. It is a great place for rugby fans to watch games.
