Howard Lee Grimes (born August 22, 1941 – died February 12, 2022) was a talented American drummer. He was most famous for being part of the Hi Rhythm Section. This group played on many popular songs in the 1970s for artists like Al Green and Ann Peebles.

Early Life and Music Career

Howard Grimes was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on August 22, 1941. He started performing music in public when he was just 12 years old, playing with Rufus Thomas. As a teenager, he began recording music regularly for Satellite Records, which later became Stax. There, he learned a lot from another great drummer, Al Jackson, Jr..

Grimes also started working with bandleader and record producer Willie Mitchell at Hi Records. After Al Jackson, Jr. passed away, Grimes became Mitchell's main drummer. He was a very important part of the house band at Mitchell's Royal Studios in Memphis. Howard Grimes helped create some of the most memorable soul songs and grooves of the 1970s.

Later Years and Legacy

After Hi Records closed down in the late 1970s, Howard Grimes continued to play music. He performed with Teenie Hodges and other musicians who were part of the Hi Rhythm group. On an album in 1994 called Perfect Gentlemen, they were known as the Hodges Brothers.

Howard Grimes passed away on February 12, 2022, at the age of 80. He died from kidney failure. His drumming helped shape the sound of soul music and left a lasting impact on many famous recordings.
