The Hruby Conservatory of Music is a historic building in Cleveland, Ohio. It was completed in 1917 and was once a well-known music school. Today, it continues to be a place where young people can learn about music and arts.
A Place for Music
The Hruby Conservatory of Music building is located on Broadway Avenue in the Slavic Village area of Cleveland, Ohio. It was designed by the architectural firm Steffens & Steffens. The building was created to be a music school for Frank and Fred Hruby. They were part of the famous Hruby Family, known for their music in the local area. The building's style is called Renaissance Revival. This style was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The building has two floors. The second floor was home to the music school. It had many studios where students could take lessons. There was also a special concert hall for recitals and performances. The first floor of the building was designed for shops and retail stores. The Hruby music school closed its doors in 1968. This happened after Frank and Fred Hruby decided to retire from teaching.
A New Chapter
In 1976, Dr. Nicholas Demmy and his wife Olean Demmy bought the building. The Demmys worked to restore the building to its original beauty. They arranged for it to become a new branch of the Cleveland Music School Settlement. The music school reopened in the building on October 2, 1980.
By 1983, the school started operating on its own. It became an independent non-profit organization called The Broadway School of Music and the Arts. This school still operates today, offering music and arts education. However, the building itself is now owned by a private individual.
A Historic Landmark
The Hruby Conservatory of Music building is important because of its history and architecture. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1979. This means it is recognized as a special place that should be preserved.
