The Hruby Conservatory of Music is a really old and important building in Cleveland, Ohio. It was finished in 1917 and is located on Broadway Avenue in an area called Slavic Village. This building was once a famous music school.

The Hruby Conservatory of Music: A Historic Landmark

The Hruby Conservatory of Music building was designed by a company called Steffens & Steffens. They created it as a music school for Frank and Fred Hruby. The Hruby family was well-known in the area for their musical talents. The building's style is called Renaissance Revival. This means it looks like buildings from the European Renaissance period, but it was built much later.

A Historic Music School

The building has two floors. The music school was located on the second floor. It had many different rooms where students could take music lessons. There was also a special hall for concerts and recitals. Recitals are like small concerts where students show what they have learned. The first floor of the building was designed for shops and stores. The music school closed its doors in 1968. This happened after Frank and Fred Hruby decided to stop teaching.

New Beginnings for the Building

In 1976, a couple named Dr. Nicholas Demmy and Olean Demmy bought the building. They worked hard to fix it up and make it look new again. After the building was restored, it became a part of the Cleveland Music School Settlement. This new music school opened on October 2, 1980.

Just a few years later, in 1983, the school started working on its own. It became an independent non-profit organization called The Broadway School of Music and the Arts. Today, this school still teaches music and arts to students. However, the building itself is now owned by a private person.

A Special Landmark

The Hruby Conservatory of Music building is considered very important. Because of its history and unique design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1979. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history.
